Yunlin Second-Hand Toy House Operation and Promotion Project
The Yunlin Second-Hand Toy House was originally the former Douliu Gongzheng Police Station and the former Administrative Office Dormitory. To promote environmental protection and energy conservation, the buildings were renovated and transformed into the "Second-Hand Toy House." The facility is furnished with second-hand toys donated by the public, providing a place where children and families can play while encouraging environmental awareness, resource conservation, and sustainable living.
The project is operated by a team led by Professor Liang-Yin Kuo from the Department of Multimedia Design, College of Arts and Sciences, National Formosa University. Guided by the concept of "Reviving Toys, Sustaining Yunlin," the project integrates technology education with industrial knowledge and practical skills. Through game-based learning activities, children are encouraged to create, explore, develop logical thinking, and strengthen their problem-solving abilities, while experiencing the core values of environmental sustainability.
The facility consists of a Themed Exhibition Hall and a Toy Exchange Center. The themed hall features a Building Block Zone, Educational Puzzle Zone, Science Zone, and Rural Toy Zone, allowing children to stimulate their creativity and imagination through interactive play while learning the value of sharing toys. To demonstrate the concept of reuse, the architectural design incorporates the principles of Recycling, Energy Conservation, and Sustainability throughout the entire facility.
Recycling
Curved landscape walls are designed around existing tree pits, creating marble roller-coaster play areas for children. Outdoor wooden play decks, sand pits, and foot-washing facilities are integrated with the landscape, allowing children to seamlessly enjoy activities from the indoor environment to the outdoor play spaces.
Energy Conservation
The building design incorporates the concepts of solar orientation and natural air circulation. Energy-saving features include optimized window placement, automated exterior louvers that reduce western sun exposure, a multi-layer roof structure consisting of a sloped roof, thermal insulation layer, and ventilated air cavity, as well as a roof ventilation system that enhances natural airflow and heat dissipation.
Sustainability
Sustainability combines the principles of recycling and energy conservation, embedding the concepts of circulation, exchange, and reuse into every aspect of both the facilities and educational activities. Through hands-on play and toy upcycling experiences, children are introduced to environmental protection from an early age, discovering that caring for the environment can be both enjoyable and meaningful.
